ASU basketball news: Writers continue to praise Bobby Hurley's Sun Devils team

Tuesday, 05 December 2017, 06:01:07 AM. ASU basketball coach Bobby Hurley's team is one of the top stories early in the college basketball season.

The ASU men's basketball team has a lot going for it early in the season.

National writers are starting to take notice.

They are heaping praise on Bobby Hurley's Sun Devils team, which is off to a 7-0 start and climbing up the rankings.

Here's what they are saying about ASU basketball:

NCAA.com: ASU ranked No. 6 in Power 36 rankings

Andy Katz writes: "Yes, the Sun Devils are skyrocketing up in the Power 36. And why not, this team is scoring at a ferocious clip, save a mere mortal 75 against San Francisco. But the Dons scored only 57. The Sun Devils, who will play St. John’s before the showdown at Kansas, are 7-0 for the first time since 1980-81. ASU coach Bobby Hurley said the Sun Devils have gone out and proven that they belong. No doubt."

AP poll: ASU up four to No. 16

azcentral sports: ASU basketball could be the real sleeping giant in Tempe

Dan Bickley writes: "They play fast and loose and are fun to watch. Hurley is proving that his impact as a basketball coach might eventually surpass his legacy as a player. He’s delivering exactly what his bosses want from the football program."

azcentral sports: ASU basketball ranked in Top 25 for first time in 9 years

Doug Haller writes: "After consecutive losing seasons, the Sun Devils are back in the Top 25, the first time since the 2008-09 season. Coming off last week's Continental Tire Invitational championship in Las Vegas, unbeaten ASU is No. 20 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the USA Today coaches poll."

sbnation.com: How Bobby Hurley made Arizona State college hoops’ most fun upstart

Ricky O'Donnell writes: "The Sun Devils are still far from a sure thing this season. That defense ... needs work. Upcoming games against St. John's, at Kansas (where no one wins) and hosting Vanderbilt will show how good this team really is heading into conference play. The important thing is that this team is just a lot of fun right now. Hurley has breathed new life into a program that has made the tournament only once post-Harden. Given the way he’s recruiting, this only feels like the start of something bigger for Arizona State."

NCAA.com: Sun Devils favorite in Pac-12?

Andy Katz writes: "The Sun Devils certainly look the part as a Pac-12 favorite — something not sure anyone would have written a month ago."

theathletic.com: Arizona State should scare everyone else in the conference

Sam Vecenie writes: "Arizona State is out to the hottest start of any team in the Pac-12, having gone to the Las Vegas Invitational and defeated Xavier and Kansas State over the Thanksgiving holiday to move to 6-0. That’s the program’s best start since 2013-14, but more importantly it’s the most energized the program has been since James Harden left in 2009."

fanragsports.com: Bobby Hurley has Arizona State a year ahead of schedule

Jon Rothstein writes: "The Sun Devils had everything aligned to be an NCAA Tournament team in 2019, when a trio of transfers — Rob Edwards (Cleveland State), Carlton Bragg (Kansas), and Zylan Cheatham (San Diego State) — became eligible, along with the addition of a 5-star freshman in 6-5 shooting guard Luguentz Dort. Their head coach had other ideas. Bobby Hurley is a lot of things, and patient definitely isn’t of them. His relentlessness is now wearing off on his team."
