Cancer care alliance to offer blood and marrow transplantation, cellular therapy

Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 07:41:01 AM. Memorial Healthcare System and Moffitt Cancer Center formed an alliance to provide care for leukemia, lymphoma and establish a blood and bone marrow transplant cellular therapy program in South Florida.

Florida’s leading cancer treatment center is setting up shop in Pembroke Pines under a new partnership with South Broward’s public hospital network, Memorial Healthcare System, to provide clinical care of leukemia and lymphoma and to establish the county’s only blood and marrow transplant cellular therapy program.

Tampa’s H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated program, provides physicians and other healthcare professionals to staff the program, which launched on July 1 at Memorial Hospital West.

Dr. Hugo Fernandez, a Moffitt cancer specialist and chair of the new program, said the Memorial alliance is the first to provide the Tampa center’s own physicians and medical staff to patients in South Florida.

“We’re trying to expand Moffitt’s footprint … in the state of Florida,” Fernandez said. “What the partnership allows us to do is instead of patients traveling all the way to Tampa, they can get it here in their backyard.”

Fernandez said that under the alliance, Moffitt and Memorial will be able to partner on cancer research in malignant hematology or blood disorders, and establish Broward’s only cellular therapy program.
