Scottsdale Chaparral third baseman Jacob Gonzalez agreed to a contract with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday morning and was in their Rookie League camp in  Scottsdale that afternoon, his father Luis confirmed.

"Yes, he didn't wanna waste time," Luis Gonzalez, the former Diamondbacks star outfielder, said in a text.

It was first reported by MLB.com that Jacob, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and the 58th overall pick of last week's Major League Baseball draft, had reached a contract agreement with the Giants.

The report says he will receive a signing bonus of $950,000. His slot value was suggested at $1.1 million. Gonzalez had signed with TCU to play baseball.

Gonzalez expects to sign after taken by Giants 58th in MLB draft

Scottsdale Chaparral third baseman Jacob Gonzalez expects to sign with the San Francisco Giants and forgo his scholarship to TCU after he was taken 58th overall in the MLB draft on Monday.

"It's a matter of working out the details," said Gonzalez, who visited the Giants last week with his father, Luis, for a pre-draft workout. "It's a great stadium, a great organization. I couldn't be happier."

Gonzalez, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, is looking at signing for more than $1 million, Luis Gonzalez said.

Luis Gonzalez, who had some of his greatest big league memories playing for the Diamondbacks against the rival Giants, said that Jacob and his adviser will get together with the Giants soon and expects him to sign.

"I couldn't be happier and more excited for him," Luis Gonzalez said. "Spring training is in Arizona. No doubt that he will sign. Jacob and his representative will make it happen and he'll be reporting to camp."

Gonzalez, who bats right-handed, was a two-time All-Arizona player at Chaparral, hitting .489 with 44 hits his senior season.

He could play either corner spot in the infield. He hits for power and average.

Even after the Giants workout, Jacob didn't know they would take him.

"No, I didn't have any hint at anything into it that they would take me," he said. "I feel it's a great situation."
