Crowded field emerges to vie for U.S. Rep. Gene Green's seat

Two state legislators already have jumped in the race to succeed Gene Green following the longtime Congressman's retirement announcement, with several others also thought to be considering bids.  State Sen. Sylvia Garcia and state Rep. Armando Walle threw their hats in the ring Tuesday morning to represent the district that covers much of eastern Houston and part of Pasadena. State Rep. Carol Alvarado, meanwhile, is "seriously considering" running, her consultant said.  Garcia cited President Donald Trump as a motivator for joining the race. "I want to continue fighting for working families, quality education for Texas children, access to health care for all, and immigration reform," Garcia said in a press release announcing her run for the 29th Congressional district. "We need a champion for the people in Washington to stand up against Trump and fight for what matters." Walle, a former Green staffer, said he hopes to expand healthcare access and job opportunities if elected. "He has a long track record, and we just want to build upon that," Walle said. "At the end of the day, this is a historic opportunity for our community." Drawn in 1991 to reflect the area's Hispanic population, the 29th District never has had a Latino representative, despite the influx of Hispanic residents. ...Read more
