Detroit's Park Bar closing next month after more than a decade downtown

Friday, 17 November 2017, 01:00:23 AM. The Park Bar in Detroit announced that it will be closing in December as a result of a sale.

The Park Bar, a pioneering hotspot in downtown Detroit's long-simmering revival, will serve its last beer next month.

The watering hole at the corner of Park and Elizabeth announced on its Facebook page that it will close in December after a blowout concert dubbed "Last Call at the Park Bar" December 2.

"The rumors are true!," reads the Facebook event page for the concert. "The Park Bar has been sold and is closing at the end of December. ... We want to thank all our loyal customers, employees and friends for your support over the last 11 years."

Opened in 2006, years before billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert began his buying spree and transformation of downtown, the Park Bar became a craft beer hotspot before and after sports games and other entertainment events in the Foxtown district.

It was home to the original location of Bucharest Grill, which did brisk business slinging its signature shawarma sandwiches out of a small kitchen attached to the bar until 2016. Bucharest was replaced a few months later by Gogo's, a restaurant run by Park Bar owner Jerry Belanger serving Hawaiian street food, but it never found quite the same audience as its predecessor.

The Park Bar is also home to the Elizabeth Theatre, which frequently hosted private parties and community events and served as a venue for the Freep Film Festival.

It is unclear what will happen with the various businesses operating out of the Park Bar or who the new owner is, as representatives of the Park Bar could not immediately be reached for comment.

The music lineup for the Last Call at the Park Bar includes Don Duprie & the Inside Outlaws, Alison Lewis & the String of Ponies, Pat V & the Detroit 3, Ty Stone, Matt Dmits, and Tino Gross. Doors open at 8 p.m. and cover is $10.

The bar will be open "various days" through the end of December.
