CLEVELAND, Ohio - Our brunch and breakfast series continues as we check out Hofbrauhaus Cleveland. Here's what to expect:
You might not think of brunch when you think of the beer hall, but Hofbrauhaus has a Sunday Bavarian Buffet. The buffet is positioned close to the brewhouse at one end of the dining hall.
Location: Hofbrauhaus Cleveland is at 1550 Chester Ave., downtown Cleveland. Phone number is 216-621-BEER (2337). Street parking and garages are nearby, as is valet for the beer hall, which sits in the shadow of Playhouse Square. With polka playing in the background, diners can choose from an array of breakfast (and more) foods.
Hours: Brunch is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. The restaurant will stay open until 8 p.m. And the regular menu is available all day if you or someone in your party wants to bypass brunch and go all out German. When they are playing, the Browns will be shown on television. (Kickoff on Sunday, Dec. 3, is 4:05 p.m. while the remaining games are all 1 p.m. - Dec. 10, 17, 24 and 31.)
Like sausage? While you can eat vegetarian at brunch, this is the place to satiate that sausage craving. Kielbasa, sauerkraut-soaked links and much more are available.
Drinks: There's a Bloody Mary bar or, if you're so inclined, a draft of German-style beer made on site under the guidance of brewer Josh Jones. (You can even get 34- or 64-ounce growlers to go.) Jones must brew in accordance with Reinheitsgebot, the long-held German Purity Law of 1516. Yes, it's a real thing.
Sweets: Pastries include strudel (of course) and other treats, most of which are manageable sizes. The Black Forest Cake, though, is a platter of huge shareable squares.
Waffles and 'cakes: On our visit waffles were available. Both waffles and pancakes are made a bit tastier with beer in the batter.
German tastes are available ... Spatzle, sauerbraten, cabbage and pork roast are served.
... as is traditional American fare: Eggs and bacon. Dishes rotate, and coffee was decent with refills
Cost: $21.99 (ages 13 and up), $17.59 (seniors), $10 (kids ages 6-12) and free (5 and under).
