It's huntin' season for Cardinals linebacker Markus Golden and quarterbacks are the quarry

Saturday, 23 September 2017, 06:00:04 AM. Arizona Cardinals linebacker Markus Golden has barely missed a couple of quarterback sacks this season, but he's not disouraged, he'll keep 'huntin'

In most states, hunting season doesn’t get into full swing until October. Not in Arizona, apparently, because Cardinals outside linebacker Markus Golden started “huntin’” when the season began Sept. 10.

In two games, Golden hasn’t bagged a quarterback. He’s barely missed getting two or three sacks, but in a way, he sees that as a good thing.

“I’m huntin’, man, I’m huntin’,” he said. “When you hunt like I hunt, you’re going to miss a few. I’ve been missing sacks since Mizzou (University of Missouri). If I could count the sacks I’ve missed, I would probably be legendary right now.”

Golden smiled as he said that because he’s not stressing about having a sack total of zero so far. In 2016 he led the Cardinals with 12 ½, and he figures the numbers will come eventually if he continues huntin’.

“That’s the thing about me,” he said. “I don’t get weary. I ain’t going to fold. I ain’t going to complain or none of that. I’m going to keep huntin’. That’s what I always do.”

Last week, Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett slipped away from Golden twice in the first quarter. After looking at video, Golden made no excuses.

“He got me, man, plain and simple,” he said. “But whoever the next quarterback is – he’s going to have to deal with me. I’m going to keep huntin’.”

Chandler Jones leads the Cardinals with three sacks, and defensive tackle Corey Peters leads the team in pressures with five.

“Two weeks in a row, he’s had them by the jersey and didn’t get them down,” coach Bruce Arians said of Golden. “Like four times now.”

Slow starts

All offseason, Cardinals coaches emphasized the need to play better early in games, especially offensively.

That hasn’t happened yet this season. The offense has produced just six points in the first halves of the two games, and the only touchdown was an interception return by cornerback Justin Bethel.

Of the Cardinals’ 11 possessions in the first half, four ended with punts, three with interceptions, two with field goals, one with a missed field goal and one on downs.

Starting faster is the biggest improvement the offense could make over last week’s game against the Colts, said receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

“Being able to get into a good running game, a good flow, a good balance to our offense earlier and often,” Fitzgerald said. “Being able to have those sustained drives where we’re executing on third-and-shorts, keeping our defense off the field, would be nice to have.

“Those are things we set up as goals for this week.”

Injury update

Receiver John Brown (quadriceps) and left tackle D.J. Humphries (knee) missed another day of practice on Friday. Receiver J.J. Nelson (hamstring) was among several players listed as limited but he is expected to play on Monday night.

Quarterback Carson Palmer did not practice, but it’s not uncommon for him to skip one practice a week.

In addition to Bucannon, linebacker Karlos Dansby (hip), tight end Jermaine Gresham (ribs) and guard Mike Iupati (triceps) were limited.

For Dallas, receiver Terrance Williams (ankle) was added to the injury report.
