THE AFL’s night of nights will provide a welcome distraction after Monday’s news Richmond captain Trent Cotchin was cleared for a bump on GWS star Dylan Shiel.
The decision split the footy world in two but now the Tigers can get on with preparing for Saturday’s grand final knowing their inspirational skipper will be lining up at the MCG.
But discussion will no doubt centre around Cotchin’s teammate Dustin Martin on Monday night. He’s the odds-on favourite to be crowned the league’s best and fairest player after a stunning year.
Fev’s ominous warning
Footy fans might not always be able to recall who won the 2009 Brownlow Medal (Gary Ablett) but they’ll certainly remember Brendan Fevola was there.
The former forward — who was punted by Carlton at the end of the 2009 season because of his off-field behaviour and picked up by Brisbane — was easily best on ground at the awards night eight years ago when a 13-hour bender ended with him being ejected from Crown Casino at 3am.
An intoxicated Fevola was let loose with a microphone and a camera to produce some quality TV that will live on Youtube forever. As Collingwood premiership winner and 2011 Brownlow Medallist Dane Swann wrote in a column for Fox Sports today: “It’s a pain in the arse, Brownlow night — especially after Fev f***ed it for everyone by carrying on during Street Talk. So timing is everything.”
But Fevola’s back in 2018 as he takes on a hosting role with Channel Seven’s red carpet coverage. “I haven’t been to a Brownlow since I dominated the last one I was at,” he told the Herald Sun last week.
“It’ll be good to get there and host it. I’m more mature these days and I think I’ll be beverage free.”
But his Instagram post on Monday — complete with a picture of him circa 2009 with the words “On a scale of 1-Fev, how loose are you getting?” — hinted he’s changed his mind and there could be few beers on the cards.
“Big night on the footy calendar today to kick of Grand Final week,” his caption read. “Good to be back on 7 tonight for the Brownlow red carpet. Wonder who’s going to have a few to (sic) many.”
