NEW YORK -- Paterson-born rapper Fetty Wap was driving drunk while drag racing on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn on Friday morning, authorities said.
Wap, whose birth name is Willie Maxwell, was behind the wheel of a black 2012 Mercedes CLS AMG when police stopped him around 1:20 a.m. near Hamilton Avenue, an NYPD spokeswoman said. He is also charged with driving on a suspended license.
Wap's blood alcohol content was above New York's legal limit of .08. He was driving 100 mph on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 50 mph.
The 26-year-old was charged with reckless endangerment, illegal speed contest, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle as well as multiple motor vehicle violations such as making an unsafe lane change and following too closely.
In September, Fetty Wap handed out cash to school children in Hackensack.
Fetty Wap has made other headlines for other flashy antics over the years, like bringing a stack of $156,000 to pay off $360 in motor-vehicle fines in Cedar Grove.
But he's also been in the news for being in the middle of a feud in Paterson that erupted in gunfire, leaving three people injured, and for filming a music video with drug references in a Paterson high school that led to the school's principal being placed on administrative leave.
