Grapes that taste like cotton candy or gum drops? You bet!
We got a tip about a new grape in town called Cotton Candy. It turns out they actually hit Detroit markets about three seasons ago, but for very limited times and quantities.
And so, what do they taste like? Drum roll, please…. Yep, cotton candy. And almost to a T. Like the sticky spun sugary treat you get at carnivals.
Free Press staffers eyes widened as they bit into these green grapes. While a bit skeptical, they were pleasantly surprised by their sweet flavor, just like cotton candy.
So, here’s the scoop. The grapes are grown at the Grapery in California and available in other candy flavors like Moon Drops (dark purple grapes) and Gum Drops (a red grape). On their web site, https://grapery.biz/, the Grapery says they achieved the flavor through natural breeding practices, experimenting and cross-pollination. And no, the they “didn’t apply any “cotton candy flavoring” or plant any sort of flavoring materials into the soil to attain the cotton candy flavor. It was the result of a lot of hard work, innovation and, okay, a bit of good luck.”
Dominic Russo, buying and selling director for Rocky Produce, Detroit, a local distributor of the grapes says this is the third season for the grapes.
“It’s really bizarre, but they are phenomenal,” he says. “Demands exceeds supply big time.”
They are not around for long, only about a month this time of year -- maybe about 2 more weeks or so. You‘ll find them at some Kroger and Meijer stores as well as Plum Markets and Busch’s Markets.
It’s best to check with the stores produce department for availability.
If you can get them, they don’t come cheap. Prices are about $5.99 a pound.
Russo says the full flavor of these grapes are brought out more when they are cold or even frozen. We agree.
