Three juveniles are in custody in connection with the beating death of a homeless man in the Mayfair neighborhood, according to Philadelphia police.
At 5:55 p.m. on Nov. 26, police responded to reports of a robbery in progress on the 4200 block of Loring Street. They found Kevin Cullen, 57, of the 2600 block of Southampton Road, unconscious at the scene, with pockets turned inside out, indicating that robbery was the motive.
He was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital, where he died the next morning.
The killing traumatized the neighborhood, where Cullen was well-known, and it was widely reported. A nearby witness said she could hear the victim’s head hitting a brick wall, and police reported that the assailants laughed as they left the scene. It fit within a national profile in which the homeless are particularly vulnerable to attacks and robberies.
Initial rumors that two suspects had been arrested proved false. Police said late Sunday afternoon that no charges had been filed and that there was no additional information to be released.
